mother, daughter

Short Film • In development

on their last night together before college, a mother and daughter attempt to understand each other.

Director’s statement:

When I came out to my mom, I thought she’d be fine with it. She’s a liberal Jew from Long Island who voted for Obama and made everyone call her a Nasty Woman. So when she had a hard time with it, we were both confused.
Often, in coming out stories, the parent is either evil or an idiot. I wanted to tell a different kind of coming out story: one that’s more interested in what comes after. The awkward, funny, painful process of a relationship evolving.
MOTHER, DAUGHTER is about the uncomfortable realization that the people who know us best may still be unknowable to us. The film will feel emotionally honest, behaviorally messy, and occasionally absurd — the way real intimacy often is.
NOTE: the short is intended as a proof of concept for a feature following Sam and Diane across multiple chapters of their relationship— from Sam coming out at the end of high school to becoming a mother herself.
